Hackathon for Information Management Code Registry

The Environmental Data Initiative is celebrating the opening of the Information Management Code Registry with a hackathon at UNM in Albuquerque, NM on June 12 – June 14, 2018.

The IM Code Registry is intended to live in the niche between publishable code packets and code snippets found in places like Stackoverflow. It will be a community maintained resource containing everything from example workflow code to programs with multiple functions that are generalized to be easily reused.  During this hackathon we will collaboratively develop code addressing common procedures that environmental information managers encounter when organizing, cleaning, manipulating, documenting, and archiving data sets.  The Code Registry will be implemented using Ontosoft (http://www.ontosoft.org/portals), which supports creating metadata to describe code. Through this hackathon, we aim to build a community that supports the idea of sharing code and enabling information managers to work more efficiently.

In this inaugural hackathon, Kaelin Crawley, Battelle scientist for the NEON project will be one of 10 coders who represent a range of disciplines in the environmental sciences. Participants will discuss organization of the repository, best practices for publishing code, and possible repository governance/maintenance approaches. There will be time to learn from each other while co-developing code specifically targeting the data cleaning process and QA/QC and archiving existing code that participants bring to the hackathon.
