About John

John is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the pathfinder and test airborne remote sensing flight campaigns during NEON's construction phase, and will direct flight operations during Observatory operations. Prior to joining NEON, John worked for Conservation International (CI) in Washington, DC where he developed the institution's satellite and airborne remote sensing programs, and conducted research into near real-time monitoring and early warning systems. He is Principle Investigator on a NASA-funded project "An Integrated Forest and Fire Monitoring and Forecasting System for Improved Forest Management in the Tropics" and acted as NGO representative to NASA's 2009 & 2011 Earth Science Senior Reviews. From 1992-1999, John directed CI's capacity building program in science and technology, and from 1986-1988 led community health and agricultural projects as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay. He holds an undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts, and a graduate degree in Environmental Studies from Yale University.
