Zoe Gentes supports the communication and engagement strategies for NEON and its growing user community. Primary responsibilities include annual communications plans across the Education and Engagement, Field Science, and Science teams; creating outreach and informational material; helping curate NEON webpages and content; writing and publishing blog posts and newsletters; assisting with press releases; and developing social media campaigns. Zoe has pursued science and science writing since high school, and communications have been a focus of her career for the past several years.
Zoe has a B.S. in Geology & Geological Oceanography from the University of Rhode Island, where she was a varsity athlete on the women’s rowing team. She worked at Scripps Institution of Oceanography after graduation in the Whale Acoustics Lab before returning to URI to earn a M.S. in Oceanography, concentration in geochemistry. Her thesis focused on basalt oxidation and composition in the Vanuatu island arc of the South Pacific. She was a Knauss Marine Science Policy Fellow in the US House of Representatives, before eventually going to work for the Ecological Society of America doing content and press release writing, media relations, news tracking, and social media. Zoe is enthusiastic about a range of ecological and scientific topics and it shows in her career path.
