Event - Webinar

Data Resources and Accessibility Across Observation Networks and Platforms

Jan 17 2018 | All day

This webinar will be from 10-11 AM Mountain Time (MT) on Wednesday January 17, 2018

NOTE: For best audio results, we recommend using Chrome during the webinar. Note that you will have the option to connect through the computer or use a call-in number - see below for tips on connecting.

With exponential growth in environmental data collection, the curation and dissemination of high-quality datasets and metadata is paramount. This is especially key in order for observational data to be used in Earth and environmental systems modeling. The goal of this webinar is to bring together scientists with data and information technology practitioners to spur discussions about the linkages between data and network resources and efforts to enhance data usage for modeling and model integration. Representatives from the International Soil Modeling Consortium (ISMC), the US Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTER), the US Critical Zone Observatory Network (CZO), the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), and EarthCube will each give short presentations to kick off the discussion. Given that each organization has different goals and is at different stages, they will discuss a variety of themes, including vision/plans for data and resources, innovations and successes in data delivery and information management, or barriers and challenges experienced or anticipated.

The charrette will begin with brief presentations from the following panelists, with plenty of time for discussion and comments from participants:

  • Teamrat Ghezzehei - University of California at Merced, ISMC
  • Corinna Gries - University of Wisconsin at Madison, Environmental Data Initiative & LTER
  • Christine Laney - NEON
  • David Lubinski - University of Colorado at Boulder, CZO
  • Miguel Leon - University of Pennsylvania, CZO
  • Eric Lingerfelt - UCAR, EarthCube

This will be the third in a series of charrettes (interactive webinars) being held to build community involvement and input in preparation for a cross-network workshop entitled using Using Observation Networks to Advance Earth System Understanding: State of the Art, Data-Model Integration, and Frontiers, which will include members of CZO, LTER, ISMC, and NEON. A recording for this charrette will be posted on the workshop website for those who cannot attend.
