Teresa Burlingame works for the NEON Science Team, primarily working with the Terrestrial Instrumentation System (TIS). Teresa started her career at NEON in 2014 working as a seasonal technician in Domain 03 – Southeast. There she advanced to work as a field ecologist specializing in terrestrial instrumentation. In 2017 she transferred to Domain 16 – Pacific Northwest, continuing to grow as a field ecologist specializing in both terrestrial and aquatic instrumentation.
Kyle joined NEON in 2017 as a field ecologist in the Pacific Northwest Domain (D16) where he managed the Terrestrial Instrumentation System (TIS) and supported the Aquatic Instrumentation System (AIS). In 2022, Kyle joined NEON's Science team as a data scientist where he focuses on data quality, monitoring, and alerting for TIS data products. Kyle earned both his M.S. in Data Analytics and B.S. in Environmental Science at Oregon State University.
Jim has a background in limnology and aquatic ecology in lakes and streams. His past research includes estimating lake ecosystem metabolism using in-situ, high-frequency dissolved oxygen sensors. He also managed a number of whole lake manipulation experiments that investigated carbon sources to aquatic food webs, leading indicators of ecosystem regime shifts, and impacts from increased dissolved organic carbon to lake ecosystems.
Kim Nitschke is the Instrumentation Group Manager for NEON. Kim, who joined Battelle in the fall of 2019, manages a specialized team responsible for delivering engineering solutions to support the NEON program’s science design, and advance the quality and availability of continental-scale ecological data products. These data products are collected with custom- engineered designs to capture data at a consistent, variable spatial and temporal scale.
Paula Mabee has served as the Chief Scientist and Observatory Director for the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) since early 2020. She is a Distinguished Emeritus Professor at the University of South Dakota, formerly the Nolop Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of South Dakota, where she served since 1997. She joined the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2015, serving until 2017 as Division Director for the Division of Environmental Biology in the Directorate of Biological Sciences.
Bobby is an aquatic biogeochemist on the NEON Aquatic Instruments Science (AIS) team. He has a background in using high-frequency, in-situ sensor data to understand biological and hydrological controls on stream metabolism and nutrient spiraling. He has conducted research across a broad range of aquatic ecosystems, from the Everglades and artesian springs of Florida, agricultural streams in central Germany, the Colorado River in the desert Southwest and snowmelt dominated alpine catchments of the Rocky Mountains.
Dr. Sara Paull is a disease ecologist who oversees the data associated with small mammal, mosquito and tick communities along with the associated pathogen datasets. She contributes to design optimization, quality control efforts, and community outreach. She also works closely with the Biorepository in the management of samples associated with these data collections and collaborates on the maintenance of the sequencing data generated by NEON observational sampling.
