Rapid Habitat Assessment and AIS Site Survey removed from Stream morphology map (DP4.00131.001) and split into two new Data Products

October 13, 2026

In January 2026, the sampling frequency for the Stream morphology map (DP4.00131.001) data product was reduced (the next sampling event for each site is planned during the last 10 years of NEON operations, see Data Notification “Modification of Select NEON Data Products” for more details). Data associated with Rapid Habitat Assessment and Aquatic Instrument Site Survey protocols have been included in the Stream morphology map data product up until now. For increased visibility, these data are now published as separate data products:

  • Rapid habitat assessment of streams (DP1.20001.001)
  • Aquatic instrument site survey (DP1.20003.001)

The Stream Morphology Map protocol (NEON.DOC.003162) has been updated and all content associated with Rapid Habitat Assessment Survey and Aquatic Instrument Site Survey has been removed. For Rapid Habitat Assessment Survey, which is conducted annually at wadeable stream sites, data product DP1.20001.001 has been created and a new protocol document, NEON.DOC.005438, has been released. For Aquatic Instrument Site Survey, which is conducted as needed, data product DP1.20003.001 has been created and the current protocol document, NEON.DOC.005399, will continue to be used.

Through RELEASE-2026, Rapid Habitat Assessment and Aquatic Instrument Site Survey data are included in Stream morphology map (DP4.00131.001) downloads. In RELEASE-2027 and subsequent Releases, all past and future Rapid Habitat Assessment and Aquatic Instrument Site Survey data will be removed from the Stream morphology map data and published as DP1.20001.001 and DP1.20003.001, respectively.
