Precipitation (DP1.00006.001) has been split into three data products

This notification serves as an update to a notification from December 2024 titled “Precipitation (DP1.00006.001) to be split into three Data Products.”

As of October 2025, NEON has split Precipitation (DP1.00006.001) into three data products:

1. Precipitation – weighing gauge (DP1.00044.001)
2. Precipitation – tipping bucket (DP1.00045.001)
3. Precipitation – throughfall (DP1.00046.001)

The former Precipitation data product (DP1.00006.001) has been retired and will no longer be publishing new data. Though DP1.00006.001 remains available in older releases, it is recommended that the new products should be used exclusively. 

NEON measures precipitation at 58 sites using up to three collection methods (primary weighing gauge, secondary tipping bucket, and throughfall tipping bucket). Despite substantial differences in site availability, sensor design, processing algorithm and scientific use case, all three methods were published in a single data product: Precipitation (DP1.00006.001). The change to three separate data products (DP1.0044.001, DP1.00045.001, DP1.00046.001) was made to alleviate user confusion and to streamline internal processes around algorithm changes. 

To access all precipitation data, users will need to download data from DP1.00044.001, DP1.00045.001 and DP1.00046.001. Weighing gauge precipitation is available as hourly and daily aggregations, while throughfall and tipping bucket precipitation remain as 1-minute and 30-minute aggregations.
