3D wind speed, direction, and sonic temperature (DP1.00007.001) are measured using the Campbell Scientific CSAT3 three-dimensional (3D) sonic anemometer at all NEON sites that collect Terrestrial Instrument System (TIS) data.
As the CSAT3 has been discontinued by the manufacturer, it is being replaced with the CSAT3B model across the NEON sites. Deployment of the CSAT3B began on August 13, 2025, and the transition will occur gradually over the next one to two years. Sites that receive CSAT3B will use that anemometer model moving forward.
To evaluate differences between the two sensor models, an intercomparison study of the CSAT3 and CSAT3B sonic anemometers will be conducted at the NEON Calibration, Validation, and Audit Lab (CVAL) outdoor test bed in 2025 and 2026. The intercomparison plan is available on request.
