NSF Harnessing the Data Revolution Machine Learning Challenge - Imageomics Institute Virtual Hackathon

The National Science Foundation's (NSF) Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) Machine Learning (ML) Challenge returns with its second FAIR competition, featuring three scientific benchmarks that push machine learning models beyond their training data:

• Neural Forecasting: Predict neural activations based on prior signals to advance brain-computer interfaces, with potential applications in artificial limb control and neurotechnology.
• Ecological Predictive Modeling: Use images of ground beetles from NEON’s Biorepository—key ecological indicators—to predict drought conditions at field sites across different timescales.
• Coastal Flooding Prediction: Model sea level changes over decades to predict future coastal flooding and assess environmental risks.

Participants can tackle one of three standalone challenges and a fourth combined benchmark, all focused on out-of-distribution modeling. NEON is partnering with the Imageomics Institute to take on the ecological forecasting sub-challenge. To support participation in the challenge, Imageomics will be hosting a virtual hackathon on Oct. 30, via Gathertown.
