About Mike

Mike Long is the Field Operations Manager for Domain 20 (Pacific Tropical) based at the United States Forest Service Institute for Pacific Islands Forestry in Hilo, Hawaii. Mike manages the Domain 20 team of three full-time field staff and approximately six seasonal field technicians. The team maintains and operates NEON’s Puu Makaala Natural Area Reserve (PUUM) site on Hawaii Island. This site includes one Terrestrial Instrumentation System with a 105’ climate tower, DFIR and soil array, and one Terrestrial Observation System across the 18,000 acre site. Mike’s career spans more than 15 years of studying and protecting Hawaii’s fragile and unique ecosystems. He has a B.S. in Biology from the University of California, San Diego and an M.S. in Natural Resources and Environmental Management from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Mike joined NEON in March, 2018 as a Field Ecologist II and became the Field Operations Manager in July, 2018. Prior to joining NEON, Mike spent four years as a Program Associate with the Hawaii Plant Extinction Prevention Program, which specialized in protecting and managing the recovery of Hawaii’s most critically endangered plant species.
