Janae Csavina manages the Calibration, Validation and Audit Laboratory (CVAL) for the NEON project. CVAL calibrates and validates sensors and data acquisition systems for the project and also creates standards such as isotopic gas and water standards used in the observatory. The lab coordinates audits for the external laboratories and participates in field audits to ensure quality in these activities. Janae’s role includes overseeing CVAL operations for schedule, quality system, personnel, budget and continuous improvement. Additionally, Janae is involved in carrying out the audits, assessing and mitigating uncertainty, developing calibration techniques, and improving quality control in CVAL.
Janae earned a BS (2004) in Chemical Engineering and a MS (2008) in Civil Engineering from Ohio University where her early research at the Biofuels Research Laboratory focused on algae for carbon sequestration, gasification, and biodiesel. She also received her MS (2010) and PhD (2012) in Environmental Engineering from University of Arizona. For her dissertation research in the Superfund Research Program she analyzed metal and metalloid contaminant transport around smelting and mining operations in Arizona and Australia. Her industry experience includes water treatment, chemical manufacturing, and pollution prevention. Janae joined CVAL for the NEON project in 2012 as the QA/QC scientist.
