NEON Research Support Services Project
CAREER: A Mechanistic Trait-Driven Framework of Avian Migration Phenology
This project places autonomous SONAR bioacoustic recording units at three NEON sites along the Central Flyway to listen for the faint calls migrating birds make as they fly overhead at night, and uses those SONAR recordings to train a neural network that can identify the calls to species, which most existing bird-sound classifiers are not trained to do. Battelle, through the NRSS, is providing installation, power, network connectivity, routine maintenance, and end-of-project removal at NEON’s Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland (CLBJ), Marvin Klemme Range Research Station (OAES), and Konza Prairie Biological Station (KONZ) sites to enable a full year of continuous overnight recording across the flyway.
