About Katie

Katie is an enrolled member of the Blackfeet Nation and a plant ecologist on the NEON Terrestrial Observation team. As the technical lead for plant phenology observations and litterfall production, she supports field collection protocols, data product development, and quality assurance for those data products and collaborates with other NEON scientists on additional plant productivity measurements. Her research interests include plant community interactions, climate change impacts on ecosystems, supporting reproducible analysis workflows, and enacting Indigenous Data Governance practices in open science research.

Prior to joining NEON, Katie worked on grassland restoration in Oregon, conducted rare plant surveys in California, educated the public as a naturalist in Costa Rica, provided wildfire risk assessment and mitigation plans in Utah, co-wrote a book on grassroots conservation in Washington state, and worked as a boatman's assistant offering natural history interpretation and breakfast on river trips in the Grand Canyon.
