Advisory Groups

The science, education and engineering communities provided essential input regarding NEON’s design from its inception to the early Observatory design phases. In preparation for the NEON’s Preliminary Design Review by the National Science Foundation in 2003, six multidisciplinary teams of experts reviewed and revised key aspects of the Observatory’s design.

Currently, NEON relies upon input from Technical Working Groups (TWGs), comprising science, education and engineering experts. TWGs provide input to the Observatory’s data collection and processing methods; they also help ensure that NEON infrastructure, data and programs are a valuable community resource. Working groups are participatory and advisory; they are often tasked with providing input on issues that have scientific, educational, engineering or operational implications.

Aquatic Instrument Technical Working Group

The Aquatic Instrument Technical Working Group supports activities related to aquatic instruments, sensors and infrastructure designs, command and control specifications, data processing techniques, and algorithm theoretical basis documents related to the majority of the aquatic instrumentation and sensor designs.

Aquatic Technical Working Group

The Aquatic Technical Working Group provides expert knowledge across the fields of Aquatic Ecology, Biogeochemistry and Ecohydrology.

Atmospheric Chemistry Technical Working Group

The Atmospheric Chemistry Technical Working Group provides expert input, insight, experience and advice regarding the senor assembly design, integrated function, critical parts and materials, flow consideration, as well as the field and lab procedures. 

Breeding Birds Technical Working Group

The Breeding Landbirds Technical Working Group provides expert input and advice regarding the science design and protocols related to NEON breeding landbirds sampling.

Citizen Science Technical Working Group

The Citizen Science Technical Working Group provides expertise in the planning and development of citizen science activities. 

Data Standards Technical Working Group

The Data Standards Technical Working Group is tasked with making recommendations to NEON about effective ways to provide NEON's data products to the broader scientific, educational, and policy communities.

Fish Technical Working Group

The Fish Technical Working Group provides expert knowledge and support for the development of field-based protocols and strategies for standardization of sampling across NEON aquatic sites.

Flux Data Quality Technical Working Group

The Flux Data Quality Technical Working Group recommends, develops and revises data processing techniques that allow testing assumptions underlying the measurement of surface-atmosphere exchange and quantify residual uncertainty terms.

Fundamental Instrument Unit Data QA/QC Technical Working Group

The Fundamental Instrument Unit Data QA/QC Technical Working Group supports activities related to assuring the quality of Fundamental Instrument Unit data products, as well as presenting quality summaries to the user community.

Fundamental Instrument Unit Technical Working Group

The Fundamental Instrument Unit Technical Working Group advises NEON personnel on matters related to the reliability and efficacy of utilizing particular sensor techniques to perform specific measurements.

Ground Beetle Technical Working Group

The ground beetle Technical Working Group provides expert input and advice regarding the science design and protocols related to NEON ground beetle sampling. 

Infectious Disease Technical Working Group

The infectious disease Technical Working Group provides expert input and advice regarding the science design and protocols related to NEON tick and tick-borne pathogen sampling, mosquito-borne pathogen sampling, and rodent-borne pathogen sampling.

LiDAR Technical Working Group

The purpose of the Airborne Observation Platform waveform LiDAR Technical Working Group is to assess current techniques for LiDAR and waveform digitizer instrument calibration and data validation, operational instrument testing, and product data formatting and to recommend a strategy for developing or implementing these techniques for vegetation remote sensing.

Microbial Technical Working Group

The Microbial Technical Working Group provides expert input and advice regarding the science design and protocols related to NEON measurements of microbial diversity in terrestrial environments.

Micromet and Flux Scales Technical Working Group

The Micromet and Flux Scales Technical Working Group recommends, develops and revises measuring and data processing techniques that allow quantifying the surface-atmosphere exchange of momentum, heat and several climate-relevant trace gases.

Mobile Deployment Platform Technical Working Group

The NEON Mobile Deployment Platform (MDP) Technical Working Group supports activities related to the development of the MDP by assisting NEON scientists with sensor integration, optimizing designs for maximum scientific utility, and collaborating on data product and document generation.

Mosquito Technical Working Group

The Mosquito Technical Working Group provides expert input and advice regarding the science design and protocols related to NEON mosquito sampling.

Plant Diversity Technical Working Group

The Plant Diversity Technical Working Group provides expert input and advice regarding the science design and protocols related to NEON plant diversity sampling.

Plant Phenology Technical Working Group

The Plant Phenology Technical Working Group provides expert input and advice regarding the science design and protocols related to NEON’s observer based plant phenology monitoring program at terrestrial NEON sites.

Plant Productivity and Biomass Technical Working Group

The Plant Productivity Technical Working Group provides input into how the NEON Terrestrial Observation System allocates sampling effort for plant biomass, productivity, and leaf area index measurements.

Reaeration and Metabolism Technical Working Group

The Reaeration and Metabolism Technical Working Group supports activities related to the development of sampling strategies, protocols, algorithm theoretical basis documents, and modeling of stream reaeration and metabolism data products.

Remote Sensing Sensor Calibration Technical Working Group

The Remote Sensing Sensor Calibration Technical Working Group provides expert external guidance into the methodologies and protocols used in the NEON Sensor Test Facility to calibrate the Airborne Observation Platform sensors. 

Scientific Research Collections Technical Working Group

The Scientific Research Collections Technical Working Group is comprised of curation, archival and museum collections experts who advise NEON’s procedures and protocols regarding scientific research collections, such as organismal and soil samples.

Small Mammals Technical Working Group

The Small Mammal Technical Working Group provides expert input and advice regarding the science design and protocols related to NEON small mammal abundance and diversity sampling.

Soil Technical Working Group

The Soil Technical Working Group supports activities related to soil sensor data collection, such as optimizing sampling designs and providing feedback on algorithms to process the data.

Spatial Sampling Technical Working Group

The Spatial Sampling Technical Working Group provides expert input and advice regarding the spatial sampling design for the NEON Terrestrial Observation System. 

Terrestrial Biogeochemistry Technical Working Group

The Terrestrial Biogeochemistry Technical Working Group provides expert input and advice regarding the science design and protocols related to NEON biogeochemistry sampling.

Urban Ecology Technical Working Group

Currently inactive: the Urban Ecology Technical Working Group provides input to NEON on a wide range of issues related to observatory measurements and observations in urban environments.
