Shelley holds a B.S. in Geology (with Honors) from UNC-Chapel Hill, an M.S. in Planetary Geology from Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. in Remote Sensing/Geology from Washington University, St. Louis. Her dissertation project combined fieldwork and sampling, laboratory and field spectral data collection, airborne Thermal Infrared Multispectral Sensor (TIMS) and AVIRIS data campaigns and Landsat data to characterize the surfaces of dry lakes in the southwest U.S. Prior to joining NEON, Shelley led the mission development activities in the Earth Sciences Mission Area at Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. While at Ball, Shelley was also the Algorithm Integrated Product Team (AIPT) Lead for a number of programs, ranging from space weather to aerosol polarimetry. Prior to her time at Ball, she worked at Atmospheric & Environmental Research (Lexington, MA), supporting the NPOESS VIIRS Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD) development effort, and was co-investigator for the Land Surface Temperature/Land Surface Emissivity and Freshwater Ice data products.
