About Mike

Mike is a forest soil scientist whose research has expanded into the limnology and biogeochemistry of temperate and polar ecosystems. He joins NEON following a post-doctoral appointment at the University of Colorado Boulder's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR). While at INSTAAR, Mike led projects studying carbon chemistry in Antarctic streams and forested watersheds of the northeastern United States. His doctoral research focused on the interactions of phosphorus cycling and atmospheric pollution in forest soils, and included field sites in Maine, West Virginia, France and the Czech Republic. Beyond research, he is extremely interested in science outreach, journalism and climate adaptation. Mike holds a B.S. in Resource Conservation from the University of Montana, an M.S. in Soil Science from North Carolina State University and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Environmental Sciences from the University of Maine (2009).
